There are actually three types of canned RF devices found in ALL consumer type
electronics (as opposed to the type we use in our CATV headends). TVs
generally have a tuner only device, VCRs have a combination
demodulator/modulator (yes it is very much like the one in your Atari), and
video games (and the Timex/Sinclair 1000) have modulator only devices. The
modulators in both cases generally have a pin to select output on channel 3 or
4. The demodulators generally require a serial data stream from a uC or uP.
The demodulators have several tuning "bands" and use PIN diodes to control the
frequency that is being downconverted. The PIN diode generally requires a
36VDC (or thereabouts) power supply at a low current and the unit as a whole
can have 6-8 different power supplies. I have used the demod/mod type units
for several projects and have the entire SHARP data sheet in printed form.
