I am Virtually Flinching from all the horrow stories people keep posting...
It isnt that Hard at ALL!!!!
In fact all the mentions of sanding the pins off was UNNECESSARY to do...
Here we go:
1. The Goo removal is useless without a replacement bios... a service
or person who can flash it, or a working bios chip from another IO.
2. You only have to expose the top of the socket so that the only goo
left is on the socket sides, the board, or betwen the chip and the
socket sides (this is minimal)
3. Do this using a simple 30watt Soldering iron and a small thin
flathead screwdriver. Pick and end and heat just like
your supposed to solder, hold it for 2 seconds and then scrape of
off... dont press down into the socket top... just
scrape the epoxy off... once its been heated a bit it comes off
easy.
4. The idea is to take off only what you have to. Dont worry about
whats between the chip and the socket walls. It
will come out easily with the chip.
5. Ever take shop or have someone teach you woodworking/etc... ? take a
little off at a time, you can always take off more
if needed... but you cant put it back on. <thanks dad>
6. Once there isnt that hump of goo on top of the socke/chip you can
then use the tip of the soldering iron to
poke small tiny holes into the chip removal corners (two corners are
opend to allow removal of the chip... these
will be filled with goo right now)Dont poke deep... just enough to
push a small awl into the hole and get leverage on the chip. The
Removal holes are easy to fine with the top goo off... if you look at the
chip so the writing is normal
(right to left) the holes are at the bottom left and top right
corners of the socket - see example below
Example: _______________
| ___________O|

| | SST | |
| | | | O= Chip removal Holes

| |__________| |
|O_____________|
7. USe an awl or something and CAREFULLY get it under the chip and rock
the chip up... Do not gouge, press hard into the
socket, or pry at the pins. As you lift the chp up a little at each
corner... switching corners... you see the goo the soldiified in the
groove come up a little... usually it will stay stuck to the socket... but
the chip will come up easily...
8. With the chip out carefully remove the extra goo with your fingers
from both the chip and socket... use the soldering iron and screw
driver if needed... the most damge you shoudl have is maybe some small
scraped on the top of the socket and the chip.
If i get another unit or someone local to me does ill post pics of
the process... but i am not someone who solders
alot or does alot of electronics... i was just careful and slow and
it worked great!
